What is the Cisnădie fortified church?

St. Walpurga is a Romanesque basilica built by the Transylvanian Saxons of Cisnădie (Heltau in German) and turned over the centuries into a fortress with defensive walls, towers and a massive bell tower. Romanesque and Gothic features survive, along with fragments of wall paintings. The tower received one of the first lightning rods in this part of Europe in the late 18th century.

What to see

  • The bell tower – a steep climb rewarded with views over Cisnădie, the Cindrel Mountains and, on clear days, Sibiu.
  • The defensive walls that protected the townspeople during sieges.
  • The church interior, recently restored.

Visitors especially praise the tours given by local student volunteers (donations welcome). The church is still in use, so please dress respectfully.
